While every room in your home should have a clearly defined purpose, there’s none more important than your kitchen.

Am I right?  Where does everybody usually wind up?

The kitchen is where it all happens.  It’s the heart of your home!

So let me ask you – do you enjoy spending time in your kitchen?

Is it easy to create healthy meals for you and your family?  Can you get to the counters to cook at all?

Are the pantry and fridge filled with nourishing, healthy food or crammed with junk?

If your home is a reflection of who you are (and it is!), the kitchen is a reflection of how you feel about your body and food.

Don’t believe me?

Would you eat in a restaurant whose kitchen was a disorganized, dirty mess?

Take a minute to walk around your kitchen with an objective eye.

  • How do you feel when you walk into the room?  What do you notice?
  • Are the countertops clear and clean?
  • Are the cabinets and drawers organized around the activities that take place there? (food prep, serving)?
  • Are there science projects lurking in the refrigerator?
  • Is the “good for you” stuff located within easy reach?

If just the thought of sifting through the countertop clutter and overflowing sink to cook a decent meal makes you shout, “Let’s get takeout!” it’s time to get your kitchen in shape!

Ok, now for a little sermonette :-)

Life in our society is very confusing.

We live in a culture obsessed by fitness, but the reality is that two thirds of us are clinically overweight or obese.  We glorify the concept of living simply but in secret we worship at the shrine of more is better.

Yet our need for order is basic and primal.  We get a gut level feeling of security when we know that everything is where it should be.

The ancient Samurai warriors recognized the importance of order like almost no one else.  Deeply spiritual, their environment reflected their need to remove distractions from their lives so they could focus on their higher spiritual purpose.

It’s impossible to stay on top of life if your space, time, and schedule are in chaos.  It affects you in ways you wouldn’t even imagine, and prevents you from getting on with the “higher things.”

That’s why I created the Organizing 101 Series.  Living in overwhelm means functioning at the most basic level of existence – survival mode.

We’re all gifted with a unique talent and purpose – and when our lives are in order, we can focus on it – and that’s what life is all about isn’t it?
